-Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) Sahih Al-Bukhari 6719

IDEAL PARENTING

Parenting encompasses the comprehensive process of nurturing, supporting, and developing children to reach their highest potential in all facets of life. This process includes fulfilling their baseline necessities, such as food, shelter, and safety. Beyond that are vital areas such as their emotional, psychological, and spiritual development.

In Islam, we consistently find reminders and commands from Allah ﷻ regarding the importance of instilling moral values such as compassion, honesty, and respect for others in our children. This requires nurturing Islamically-oriented individuals who understand the goal of their existence, aim to please Allah, seek His guidance, live the comprehensive meaning of worship, and embody the qualities of sincere and dedicated Muslims.

They become bearers of the message and individuals devoted to Islam’s mission through a deep understanding of its highest ideals, objectives, and intents. These values should then manifest into them becoming positive agents of change that are self-motivated individuals who put their beliefs and thoughts into action; proactively seeking ways to improve themselves and positively impact others around them. They are also lifelong learners who have a strong passion for knowledge and self-growth. They gain literacy in core Islamic sciences, pursue knowledge in diverse areas (self-development, raising a family, civic engagement, professional achievement, etc.), and gain practical skills essential for their lives and the future families that they will lead in sha Allah.

Helping our children attain these qualities requires an intentional approach, focus, patience, determination, and a diverse set of strategies and efforts that are always evolving and growing. They also require a parent’s own spiritual, cognitive, and emotional growth in order to be able to impart them to their children as well.

“The Messenger of Allah s.a.w. said: The best of you are the best to their families, and I am the best of my family.” Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3895
